  • Durango mountain biking.

Mountain Biking (MTB) may not have been born in Southwest Colorado, but our mountains and trails are certainly where it came of age.
The first ever UCI World Mountain Bike Championships were held in Durango and hosted at nearby Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort. Twenty plus years later our area plays host to thousands of visiting riders and has grown to include hundreds of diverse trails from desert's edge to the highest mountain vistas.
At Wilderness Trails we have developed a skill building trail system on the ranch that is sure to challenge novice to pro alike. We are part of the progressive trail building mindset and look forward every year to creating more varied, challenging and fun terrain and trail variations and trip plans to appeal to everyone, whether you're 9 or 90!
Those seeking a bit more will want to do a short shuttle or forest road ride just 2 and 1/2 miles from Wilderness Trails to the rolling and stunning singletrack trail network around Vallecito Lake. You will take in big views of the rugged peaks to the north as you serpentine under the towering Ponderosa Pines and bristling sway of the Aspen groves.
Our more adventurous guests will find themselves wide eyed and smiling with childlike glee from the gravity shuttle up nearby Middle Mountain, a 12 plus mile motorized van ascent to the top of amazing gravity inspired riding on the return back to Vallecito Lake. This route is unique in that it allows riders of different skill levels a chance to pick whatever variations they want to ride while being in a graduated setting that is great for the whole family. A truck or Van shadows the entire trip for a different ride, should a member of the group reach their limit or the weather challenges the riding.
Still imagining more? We can make arrangements to get expert guide and coaching trips on many of the Durango area riding trails with our network of affiliated guides and area shops as well as Durango Mountain Resort. Those choosing to travel on our new San Juan Skyway Overland Scenic Tour will also find riding opportunities everyday of the Tour, highlighted by the Telluride Mountain Bike Park accessed by the town's Gondola system. This is a world class freeride and downhill venue that will test the mettle of even the most skilled, seasoned and hardened riders.
Wilderness Trails offers guests scheduled use of our professionally maintained and serviced state-of-the-art front suspended hard tail NORCO bikes or the chance to upgrade into a full suspension NORCO trail/ freeride type MTB for a small charge.
If nothing but a full DH, Freeride or Dirt Jump specific ride is going to satisfy, we generally recommend bringing your own (we'll arrange a professional reassembling as required as well as shipping) That said, with adequate lead time we can often find a short term rental opportunity from one of our local MTB shops.
When you are ready to experience a ranch that doesn't just have some bikes as another listed activity, but actually lives and breathes the culture of MTB and has been a part of it from the beginning, then come ride with us, come Ride Wilderness Trails.
