More than a riding school in Steamboat Springs
At Steamboat Equestrain School, we strive to be more than a riding school. Our approach to the equine world is more holistic. We teach children not only the skills of riding, but also the responsibilities that come with taking care of the ponies and horses that we work with.
We offer a variety of programs for children. In our younger groups, an emphasis is place on forming relationships with, and caring for the ponies and horses. As skills, age and comfort increase we work with more and more riding skills and horsemanship games. Most of our classes are small group lessons with a maximum of 5 kids (and a minimum of 3 kids per class). But we do offer private lessons.
For children under the age of 3. If your little one is still too young for the Buckaroos he/she can join little britches and get to know the horses, help brush, give cookies and go for a pony ride.
For ages 4-5, the Buckaroos program introduces young children to the equine world. The children will learn the basics through a variety of activities. Children will learn their "horse manners", and how to safely interact with horses. We will focus on building comfort and relationships between the children and horses in a safe, fun and playful manner. Each class includes clubhouse education in horsemanship, as well as time in the saddle. Parents are asked to stay with their children.
For ages 6-10, the Wranglers program is designed to teach children equine basics and horsemanship. As with all our programs, children will first learn to approach, feel comfortable and safe around the horses. From there, they move on to basics of caring for and riding the ponies and horses. Each class includes clubhouse education in horsemanship, as well as time in the saddle. Parent involvement is needed**.
Wranglers will learn skills including:
- Proper grooming, before and after riding
- How to saddle, bridle and lead your horse
- How to mount and dismount
- Riding skills at a walk and a trot
- And of course fun horse games and activities
This class is for the children who already have some experience with horses and riding, and know how to control their mount at a walk and a trot. We will work on more advanced riding techniques, play games, have fun quizzes, and learn to be in better balance with the horse. Each session includes clubhouse education in horsemanship, as well as time in the saddle.
